Densification of a polymer glass under high-pressure shear flow

چکیده
The properties of glasses can change significantly as they evolve toward equilibrium. Mechanical deformation appears to influence this physical aging process in conflicting ways, with experiments and simulations showing both effects associated rejuvenation away from overaging the equilibrium state. Here we report a significant densification effect polymer undergoing shear flow under high pressure. We used high-aspect ratio geometry layer compression test measure uniform homogeneous accumulation plastic strain during isothermal confined deeply quenched film polystyrene glass. Combined scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM) atomic force confirmed defect-free leaving up 1.2% residual conditions uniaxial strain. At higher peak strain, extruded glass below compressing punch background A further density increase 2% was observed by STXM for highly thinned thickness that nevertheless showed no signs crystallization or internal localization. While be accounted simple elastic--plastic constitutive model, high-pressure extrusion cannot.

Cyclic motion of a grafted polymer under shear flow.
The long-time dynamics of a single end-tethered chain under shear flow are studied using molecular and Brownian dynamics simulations of a flexible polymer. As observed in previous experiments with tethered DNA [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 4769 (2000)], under a flow sheared at constant rate the chain performs a cyclic motion. But, contrary to what has been previously suggested, a well-defined character...
متن کاملPersistence of a Rouse polymer chain under transverse shear flow.
We consider a single Rouse polymer chain in two dimensions in the presence of a transverse shear flow along the x direction and calculate the persistence probability P0(t) that the x coordinate of a bead in the bulk of the chain does not return to its initial position up to time t. We show that the persistence decays at late times as a power law P0(t) approximately t{-theta} with a nontrivial e...
متن کاملPressure Induced Densification and Compression in a Reprocessed Borosilicate Glass
Pressure induced densification and compression of a reprocessed sample of borosilicate glass has been studied by X-ray radiography and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction using a Paris-Edinburgh (PE) press at a synchrotron X-ray source. The reprocessing of a commercial borosilicate glass was carried out by cyclical melting and cooling. Gold foil pressure markers were used to obtain the sample p...
متن کاملThe effect of high-pressure densification on ballistic-penetration resistance of a soda-lime glass
Molecular-level modelling and simulations of the high-pressure volumetric response and irreversible densification of a prototypical soda-lime glass are first employed. The molecularsimulation results obtained were next used to modify the pressure versus degree-of-compression (the negative of volumetric strain) and yield strength versus pressure relations in order to account for the effects of i...
متن کاملPressure-Induced Densification of Oxide Glasses at the Glass Transition
Densification of oxide glasses at the glass transition offers a novel route to develop bulk glasses with tailored properties for emerging applications. Such densification can be achieved in the technologically relevant pressure regime of up to ~1 GPa. However, the present understanding of the composition–structure–property relationships governing these glasses is limited, with key questions, e....
